Tools for working with leather
When working with leather, you will need a set of different tools. Tools come in many different varieties, and everybody will find their own favorites along the way. Also, whether you are just starting to work with leather or you have done so for many years, will also have an impact on your choice of tools. If you are just starting to work with leather, you can always try out a few tools at the beginning and then expand your collection of tools as you need them. Edge tool
An Edge tool or an Edger is a simple, but useful tool. It can be used when you have a square, raw edge on your leather and you want it to be a round, smooth edge. Swivel knife
A swivel knife is used for carving a design into the surface of your leather as an initial phase, as it will later be tooled with other stamps and such to create the final, clear decorations and designs. A swivel knife has a chisel-edged blade on a pivot, which has a saddle for your finger. It is supposed to be held between your thumb and middle finger, with your forefinger placed in the saddle on top of the swivel knife.
Cutting mat
A cutting mat is a very simple tool; however, it is hard to go without. It can turn any surface into your new workbench, so you do not have to be afraid that the surface underneath is damaged. In your work with leather, you will probably need a lot of punched holes for rivets, snaps, belts and so on. That is why a punch tong can be a very useful tool to invest in. It makes it very easy to make a hole in your leather, for every purpose you can think of.

Different sorts of knives are also useful tools for working with leather, as knives can be used for many different purposes and they are essential to your set of tools.
